- In 1981 I finished my undergrad degree in Physics from San Diego State U and was looking for "an adventure". As part of that quest I got a chance to crew on some sail boat races, but when I heard the Peace Corps recruiter was going to be on campus, I said "Why not?". This led to a 2 year stint living in Ghana, West Africa, teaching A-level Physics at Mfantsiman Girls Secondary School. I have a box full of pictures from in-country training and from my site. It hasn't been opened in at least 35 years, so I'm hoping they are still OK. I hope to share some photos and stories from my time there.
September 5 - Break for Labor Day
August 1 - Alan Hebert shares his Clarinet hobby!
- Tonight in Hobby Night, you'll learn a little bit about the clarinet . . . where the instrument came from, the different kinds of clarinets, and so on. I'll talk a little bit about how I started playing and give you a peek into my family photo album. Finally, we'll listen to two recordings of Yours Truly playing "classical" clarinet in small groups.
July 4 - Susan Vargas shares her Seashell Collecting hobby!
- Sure, we’ve all picked up a few seashells at the beach, but Susan has a collection of exotic and beautiful specimens to share with us (virtually).
June 6 - Kim Marinucci Acker shares Cooking with the Seasons!
- Please join me as I share my passion--food as sacred encounter. Sharing my food journey through the lens of memoir, spiritual practice, ecological farming, animal husbandry, activism, and the daily practice of cooking with local, seasonal ingredients, I hope you'll come to know me better and find inspiration to bring new life to your relationship with food.
May 2 - Sarah Weaver shares her Victorian Research hobby!
- I have pursued both my PhD and my research since graduation basically for fun – certainly no one is paying me to do it! I use vacation time to go to Victorian studies conferences and visit the British Library, and I love digging into the history of people who were trying to make sense of a rapidly changing world by means of scholarly fields that they were inventing as they went along. I'll talk about some of the research I've done, focusing on my favorite Victorian: a linguist, historian, and archaeologist who defies some of the preconceptions you probably have about nineteenth-century Britain.
April 11 - Bill Walker shares his Accordion Playing hobby!
(HOBBY NIGHT will be on the 2nd Sunday in April, the 11th, then back to the first Sunday starting in May.)
March 7 - Siri Huntoon shares her Sketching Nature hobby!
- Drawing nature is a mental challenge because nature is so vastly much more complex than our built environment. Whoever believes the nude is the hardest subject has not felt their butt meld with the cold and damp ground, finishing a drawing of a manzanita thicket before its 100,000 elegant little leaves fade into twilight! It's a battle between eye, hand, water, ink, paper and coyotes, I will share it all!
February 7 - Pastor Greg shares his Woodworking hobby, with pictures, insights, and demonstrations!
- What I really love about woodworking is the creativity, the problem-solving, and the work with a (once-)living medium - wood moves and bends and twists. And, the mystic in me believes it has a story to tell. The colors and textures of different varieties of wood are like paints on a palette or notes in a song or words in a poem.
